Message from the Executive Director

Following a successful 2024, I am proud of and grateful for accomplishments we shared throughout the year. The driving force behind our progress continues to be the dedication of our members, partners, and staff.
At TMACOG, we see the power of regional collaboration in action. I’m grateful for the contributions and service of everyone who helps TMACOG work to advance our region, whether you served on a committee, participated in our strategic planning process, voted on important updates to our bylaws, or supported our programs and initiatives in other ways.
The insight and ideas that went into creating a new strategic plan have shaped a new direction for TMACOG. Together we have crafted a vision that will guide us towards a more sustainable, prosperous, and connected region. Active participation has ensured that our strategic plan reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of our communities.
Our combined efforts have yielded impressive results. We have made new transportation plans and secured funding for infrastructure projects to enhance connectivity and mobility across our region. Our environmental initiatives have advanced, with new programs aimed at protecting our natural resources and promoting sustainability. We have also ventured into regional economic development, with plans to bring community and business leaders together to create a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for our region in 2025.
One standout achievement has been the launch of the Water Workforce Coalition, which has launched the professional development of dozens of new operators for water and wastewater services, a crucial need across our region. This partnership with Owens Community College, the City of Toledo, and many utility partners will continue with a third cohort of students this spring, while we study ways to continue this valuable program.
Our work in transportation planning also took great strides over the past year. In addition to awarding nearly $21 million in TMACOG managed Surface Transportation Block Grant funds to 14 projects in Lucas and Wood counties, the Transportation Department completed major planning work on regional electric vehicle charging infrastructure, freight transportation, and safety.
Notable accomplishments in 2024 also included:
- A new educational program, Lake Erie Starts Here, that shares seasonal tips for protecting water quality and the message that the health of one of our greatest natural resources. This partnership of TMACOG’s Stormwater Coalition assists member communities in fulfilling outreach requirements of their stormwater permits.
- An event that connected water and wastewater plant staff with experts and engineers who shared information about new and upcoming regulations for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
- The 35th year of the Student Watershed Watch, which has equipped teachers across the region to share scientific skills and water quality knowledge with more than 25,000 students since 1989.
- Transportation restructuring that established the Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Board and the Technical Advisory Committee.
- A new dashboard with valuable Justice40 data and the kick-off of a Regional Resilience Improvement Plan.
- Additional opportunities for collaboration through a new program, Government Leaders Affinity Exchange Network, or GLEAN.
- The creation of two new policy agendas to support our work in transportation and water quality.
I look forward to continuing our momentum in 2025. Our focus will remain on delivering value to our member organizations while fostering regional collaboration, driving innovation, and improving the quality of life for all residents of our region. Here’s to a successful and inspiring year ahead!
