The Chessie Circle Trail has a rich local history and bright future as part of the northwest Ohio trail system.
The Chessie Circle Trail is a unique 11-mile long corridor that was built on a the footprint of an historic Toledo railroad line. Once trains served small and large manufacturers along the Toledo Terminal Railroad. Now a group of partners are paving this long route through dense population areas, creating a new transportation alternative. The path has parking at access points, wayfinding signage, and information kiosks. The multi-use path links schools and university campuses, hospitals, shopping areas, and parks.
TMACOG acquired the property from the CSX railroad in 2011 for $6.6 million. The partners that helped purchase the corridor are the University of Toledo, the city of Toledo, Metroparks Toledo, Wood County Park District, and the Wood County Port Authority. TMACOG transferred ownership to the respective owners when the acquisition was complete. The rail corridor extends from Laskey Road to River Road in Toledo and from River Road (State Route 65) to Bates Road in Wood County. As Norfolk Southern currently has an easement that allows operation of their trains in the middle section of the corridor, initial trail development will occur in the northerly and southerly reaches of the corridor.
TMACOG is a member organization. Members include cities, counties, villages, townships, schools, and special districts.
