National Bike to Work Day: Friday, May 15

Olander Park to Downtown Toledo | 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM & 4:30 - 5:30 PM

National Bike to Work Day takes place each year on the third Friday in May, during National Bike Month. This observance encourages us to consider riding a bike to get to work, and to be aware of cyclists as they commute to and from work each day.

Toledo will celebrate Bike to Work Day with a community event encouraging people to commute from Sylvania to Downtown Toledo along a planned route with dedicated bike infrastructure and low-traffic neighborhood streets at a 10-12 mph pace.

On the way, you can learn about tips for commuting around the Toledo area while enjoying active time outdoors with fellow riders. All riders and all bikes are welcome, including e-bikes and e-scooters.

There are pick-up points in Sylvania, at University of Toledo, and downtown.

Then enjoy coffee, food trucks and more at the final stop at One Government Center before heading into the office.

For riders heading home in the afternoon, the bike bus will depart from Downtown Toledo at 4:45 p.m. following the same route.

The Ride of Silence: Wednesday, May 20

The Ride of Silence is an international movement to remember people who have been injured or killed while riding a bicycle. Cyclists participate in slow-paced public rides to honor those who have been hurt, and to bring awareness to the critical importance of safety and bicyclists’ right to use public roadways.

Local rides in Toledo and Bowling Green will begin promptly at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, so please arrive by 6:30-6:45 p.m. These events are free and open to the public. No registration is necessary, but helmets are required.

Toledo

Bicycles are soaring in popularity, and families are eager to learn where and how they can ride safely.

Each May (and throughout the year), Lake Erie West supports recreational bicycle riders and works to encourage the use of bikes for commuting and errands.

• Lake Erie West coordinates Bike Month as a way of promoting the benefits of riding a bike both recreationally and as a mode of transportation. Not only does riding a bike provide healthy exercise, it has environmental and economic benefits, too.

• Although up to 40 percent of all trips people make are less than 2 miles, 82 percent of these short trips are taken in a car.
• Most people in our region live within 10 miles of their job, and more roads now accommodate bikes with marked lanes or sidepaths.
• Riding a bike either directly to work or to a bus stop to make that connection with public transit saves you money and reduces air pollution and congestion in our region.
• The next time the weather is right and you have some time, try leaving your car keys at home and hopping on your bike instead. You can download a bike map on Lake Erie West's website to learn how to get where you want to go.
