Leaky gas caps are a preventable cause of air quality pollution that also impact your wallet. Aside from the environmental impact, a broken or missing gas cap can impact your vehicle’s performance and reduce fuel efficiency by up to 2 full tanks of gas each year. Poor air quality also contributes to public health problems, including asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, and bronchitis.
Older vehicles are more likely to have a poorly sealed cap, but any vehicle could be leaking. A loose gas cap may trigger the check engine light, so if the light turns on randomly or right after filling up, the cap may need to be replaced.
Drive up to a TMACOG testing site this summer to make sure your passenger car or light truck is not harming local air quality.
In addition to making sure your gas cap has a proper seal, you can practice "clean air car care" by:
Individual actions can help improve air quality across our region.
