Innovative Cranes on the Way to North Baltimore
Construction and development of the CSX National Gateway Intermodal Terminal in North Baltimore is moving ahead quickly. A major piece of the hub will be the installation of five 150-foot-tall cranes which will be arriving at the Port of Toledo in early June. When installed, each widespread crane will span eight tracks, two straddle lanes, one truck lane, and five container stacks (four high). The North Baltimore site will be the first use of this innovative crane technology in the United States. In operation, the cranes will roll between the rows of rail and trucks and pick up and move standardized shipping containers, resorting for the next stage of shipping. The operation is semi-automated, is nearly silent, and will improve safety while increasing throughput at the terminal and reducing transit time.
