Rainy Bike Week 2010
For the first time in many years, rain cancelled many Bike Week events. Senator Teresa Fedor did set off in the rain for her ride from Glendale-Fielbach school to Columbus, and Mayor Bell, Police Chief Navarre, and Fire Chief Wolever all braved the rain on Bike to Work Day. Schoolchildren and their teachers participated in Bike to School Day at Starr Elementary and Fassett Middle School in Oregon. On the only dry and sunny day of the week, approximately 175 riders turned out for the Ride of Silence, a 7.8 mile ride around west Toledo to remember people who had been hurt or killed while riding bicycles on public roads and to remind drivers to share the road. The quiet ride included family groups with children in trailers, bike clubs in matching gear, and regular bicycle commuters with dusty road bikes. Police from the City of Toledo, Ottawa Hills, and the University of Toledo provided escorts and held back auto traffic at intersections.
