Joint meeting of TMACOG and SEMCOG Transportation Departments
The transportation planning departments of TMACOG and the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG), work together throughout the year on transportation projects which cross state boundaries. Annually, the departments have a formal joint meeting to maintain good communication and ensure cooperation. The June 24 joint meeting at Cabela’s in Dundee covered a wide range of topics.
Passenger rail is an area where both groups are coordinating efforts. TMACOG staff reported on funding for high-speed rail, the progress of the Midwest Regional Rail (Chicago Hub) System and the Ohio Hub, and the development of commuter rail service to Ann Arbor. SEMCOG staff provided an overview of several passenger rail initiatives in southeastern Michigan. They also discussed the potential to reinstate service and operations and improve capacity on the north-south rail routes between Toledo and Detroit.
TMACOG staff reported on developments in intermodal facilities in northwest Ohio including the Toledo Express Airport BAX/Schenker International Air Cargo Facilities, Airline Junction Rail Yard in Toledo, Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority Midwest Terminal at Ironville Dock, and CSX National Gateway at North Baltimore. SEMCOG provided an update on the status of the Ambassador Bridge replacement, the Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC), and the I-75 Gateway projects, and plans for the Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal Project.
TMACOG’s Vice President of Transportation Warren Henry shared a question and answer presentation titled Transportation and Climate Change: Causes and Consequences, that was presented by FHWA at the recent National Association of Regional Council (NARC) conference. The presentation sheds light on how climate change will shape the next transportation bill. Anyone interested in obtaining a copy can contact Warren Henry.
